At
Katavothra in Iti there is "Marmara", where there are big ruins of
the temple of Hercules and altar to its southern side. The Temple is
built with local Stone in Dorian order. Near the ruins of Pira the mythical
hero of Dorians Hercules was tortured and deified. His martyrdom was a god wish
and the oracle about it made by the Oracle of Delphi was given to the demigod
by Likimnios and Iolaos. Hercules rooted up the firs from the slopes of Iti and
set them on fire with Paiantas' help and fell in to be burned. A holocaust took
place in order to save himself from the poisonous tunic of beautiful Ioli,
daughter of the King Evritos. A cloud covered the demigod and took him to
Olympus, near the gods.
