It is the
village of the big heroes of Roumeli, Panourgias, Ioannis Gouras, Mamouri and
Papa-Kosta Tzamala, in the war in 1821. The anniversary of the battle of
Dremissas on the 17th of May 1821,
in Arvanitohori was established as national celebration.
This battle played a decisive role, judging the outcome of the war in 1821. It
was the first big victory. After the occupation of the heroic “Inn of Gravias”
by Omer Vrioni, it was easy to reach Salona. Omer Vrionis thought that there
was danger in Vlahohoria. More than 3.000 Turk-Albanians with cavalry came in
the region. However with Ioannis Gouras' help the enemy fleed. The battle in
Vlahohoria not only secured the outcome of the war but also wrote history .
Between Kavallaria and Arvanitogori there is the location of Agios Nikolaos.
The church was built after the battle. It was a church dedicated to the martyr
Saint Nikolaos Metsoviti, that was burned alive by the Turks on the 17th
of May 1617. The faithful Christians
attributed the miracle of the devastation of Omer Vrionis to the Saint, whose
celebration was on that day. According to Trikoupis, the Turks left Hani on the
16th and victory came thanks to the miracle of Saint Nikolaos on the 17th. This
victory was incredible.
