It is the
annual celebration of the historical anniversary of the naval battle in the bay
of Iteas, when on the 17th of September 1837, the philhellene English skipper
Frank Abney Hastings governor of first steam-driven boat, called
"Karteria" and head of a small Greek naval force, it anchored near
the Turkish fleet, that rode at anchoring in the bight of "Agkalis"
in the western side of the gulf of Iteas, which was defended from land by 500
men and firearms that were handled by European artillerists. In half an
hour, Hastings blew up the Turkish flagship and destroyed other war as well as
3 Austrian boats of supply and the field guns. This victory restored the
sovereignty of the Greeks in the Corinthian gulf and ensured the communication
with Peloponnese, constituting one of the main main reasons of the Naval battle
of Navarino on the 20th of October 1927 signaling the beginning of independence
of Greece. By the 4th of April 1990 with a presidential legislative the last
Sunday of September every year is Day of Public Celebration. The events begin
the previous days with impressive representations, outdoors events, music and
dance events and other ones, while the day of the celebration f honorary
memorial service takes place with speeches, dancing, representations, exhibits
of photograph and other.
