Below the
top of the hill in the north-west of Galaxidi, in an altitude of 300m. There
is the Byzantine monastery of Metamorphosis of Sotiros, which according to the
narration of the priest-monk Efthimios, was built in 1250 by Bishop Mihail V,
after the request of his wife blessed Theodora. Nikolaos Karoulis a chief
worker from Galaxidi was in charge of the building. After it was built Bishop
Mihail donated the Monastery of Sotiros many royal and precious gifts,
candelabra, silver hanging oil-lamps and white and eminent marble columns. The
Monastery possessed royal letters and golden bull, manuscript of historical and
ecclesiastical value. There in 1703 the priest-monk Efthimios wrote the
"Chronicle of Galaxidi", the history that is of the area from 990 to
1700. Today in the Monastery new cells, guest quarters and new stone
surrounding wall have been built. Shortly the temple will be restored, after
the damage made by the earthquakes. Street through the beautiful hill of Agia
Triada leads us to the church.
