The most
important archaeological sight is in Giros or Palaiokastro in the Municipal
District of Efpalio, where the Citadel that was built by the Lokroi in the 11th
or 12th century AD dominates on a hill. The first residents of the
region, the Lokroi, chose this location in order to build this ancient city
(ancient Efpalio), which was very well fortified for their safety, very close
to the hinterland and precisely above the natural and secure harbor. A marble
plate with two signs was found. On the foot of the hill there is the ancient
Erithres. The iron bollards of the boats are still standing today and are
evidence that in the Ancient times the level of the sea was at least 3-5 meters above the present
level. Recently, the Ministry of Culture characterized Palaiokastro as an
archaeological sight of enormous historical value. The excavations are to be
continued.
