In the north-west in Hrisso, in a
distance of 7 kilometers, there is the monastery of Prophet Ilias. One
can reach the monastery through Delphi. It is built in a charming location, in
an altitude of 400m., with view of the enormous olive grove of Amfissa, the
Corinthian gulf, Galaxidi and some mountains of Peloponnese. The monastery was
widely known because during the Revolution in 1821 it was the base of the
operations and the shelter of the fighters of Eastern Central Greece, until
August in 1825, when the Turks totally destroyed it as well as the old Temple,
which was built again in the same place in 1834. It was also set on fire by the
Italians in February of 1943. They started rebuilding it in 1961. Particularly
the last few years when it become men` s monastery, many important works of
maintainance have taken place. Visitors can admire the beautiful woodcut icons
screen, with representations from the Old and New Testament, work of an
important artist from Epirus, but also its precious library, with handwritten
documents and letters from the period of revolution.
