In the
centre of Amfissa there is the Cathedral of Annunciation of Virgin Mary. It
is eminent both because of the marvelous architecture, which is Byzantine
order, and because of the internal decoration, with the prevailing element of
the fresco created by professor of painting and painter of holly Spyros
Papaloukas. It is the continuation of the strict style of Byzantine tradition
and is the only work of religious art made the recent years. This brilliant work
finished in six years (1926-1931). In the dome we can see Pantocrator and in
each corner of the base the 4 Evangelists. In the middle of the sanctum we can
see Virgin Mary. The rest of the Temple is covered with scenes from Jesus` life
from the Birth and the Baptism to the Crucifixion and the Resurrection. Icons of
Apostles, Archangels, Saints and Christian martyrs are between the
representations. In the facade of the ginaikoniti (a place in churches set
apart for women) the Assumption of Virgin Mary completes this magnificent work.
