Giona is
the fifth highest mountain in Greece and the highest in central Greece. It
is in the centre of important mountain massifs such as Parnassus in the east,
in the west river Mornos separates it from Vardousia while in the north there is
Oiti.The highest summit is Piramida (2,510 m.) and other important summits are:
Tragonorus (2,454 m.),
Plativouna (2,346 m.)
etc. In Giona there is also the eminent slope of Plaka near the village of
Sikea. It is one of the most beautiful mountainsides in the Balkans and the
biggest one of the Greek mountains with about 1,100 hypsometrical difference.
In this slope as well as in other important climbing tours have taken
place. Giona is constituted mainly by calcareous rocks that are covered by firs,
cedar trees and holm-oaks. In the clearings, there are beautiful wild flowers
such as hornbeans, wild roses etc.There are also wild boars, roes and wild
goats, whereas in the steep slopes big predestory, harrier and golden eagles.
In in the heart of Roumeli, between Parnassus and the steep Vardousia, there is
the magnificent massif of Giona. High summits, steeps slopes, deep
ravines,peaceful meadows, dense forests, cool springs and streams, compose the
soul of a mountain maintains its magic,
its legend and its splendour.Visitors are taught by nature, carried away by the
adventure and their soul is able to dream there.Having as a lodging the small
picturesque mountaineering shelter of Hiking Club of Athens in Laka Karvouni,
above Reka and given that the mountain is very big, visitors do not only have
the tall meadows under the summits for an overnight staying in a tent.
